Automate Monzo Savings with IFTTT Applets

Monzo IFTTT Applets

Logging in to your banking app at the end of the month to move leftover cash from a checking account into a savings account is an easy way to accumulate cash savings. But with If This Then That (IFTTT), you can automate money transfers into a Monzo Savings Pot based on triggers.

Example (of a little wacky) Saving Applets

  • Every time you spend, you save £1.
  • Each day, add to a savings pot the number of pence equal to the day's highest forecasted temperature.
  • Save for a holiday whenever it rains.
  • Gym and Earn: when you enter a gym, send money to a savings pot.
  • Save an amount per day.
  • Move money into a pot every time you tweet.

Note that moving money to savings is obviously not the limit of automation. There are many other types of actions, such as moving travel savings when you withdraw from an ATM in a foreign country, saving receipts to Dropbox, or when spending in 'Eating Out', redeem from a savings pot.

How to Set Up

Firstly, of course, there is a prerequisite of having a Monzo account with a savings pot already created (a round up payments savings pot is a good choice).

All you need to do is head to IFTTT to install the App or just use their website. Once registered search for 'Monzo' to head to the Monzo integrations page and click connect to enter the email address you used to register your Monzo account.

Once connected on the 'Monzo Integrations' page, you should see a list of all their applets. For example, 'Get an email when Monzo publishes a new trigger or action.' Just visit an applet and click 'connect' to enable. You get to select which savings pot to send the money to.

Let's hope it rains every day... :-)
